Lancaster Royal Grammar School

GIAS's single 'Mixed' gender tag hides the real picture — Year 7 entry is boys-only, and girls join only at sixth form, where they've been day pupils since 2019 and boarders since 2020.

Endowed in 1472 and granted its 'Royal' title by Queen Victoria in 1851, Lancaster Royal Grammar runs its own independent GL Assessment test with no shared Lancashire consortium — the county's four grammar schools coordinate nothing beyond the statutory local-authority coordinated admissions timetable that every secondary school participates in. Places are allocated primarily through a two-tier catchment (a 'Priority Catchment Area' covering the City of Lancaster, then a larger bounded 'Residual Catchment Area'), with applicants entirely outside both admitted only if places remain — in practice, essentially never.
